Simon Yam (任達華), Nick Cheung (張家輝), Annie Liu (劉心悠) and Irene Wan (溫碧霞) in Exodus

The San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain closed yesterday, with the announcement of the winners.

Hong Kong production Exodus < 出埃及記> was among those honoured, with cinematographer Charlie Lam (林志堅) winning the Jury Prize for Best Cinematography. The Golden Shell for the Best Film went to Chinese-American director Wayne Wang (王穎新) for A Thousand Years of Good Prayers < 千年敬祈>. Wang is better known for his earlier success with The Joy Luck Club < 喜福會>.

Exodus director, Pang Ho Cheung (彭浩翔) was not present to share the moment with Lam, but was very happy for his partner, who he has worked with on a number of films previously. Pang said: “I am very happy because from writing the film, to choosing locations and then filming, I had an understanding with Lam. For example, we used a lot of long lens shots, which is quite unusual in Hong Kong films. It appears that the Spanish jury particularly liked the opening scene where the frogmen attack.”

Lam was very excited to win international acclaim: “I am very happy to win the award and thankful to the bosses at Filmko for making this film as well as Pang Ho Cheung and all the cast and crew.”

Exodus went on general release in Hong Kong on 08 September 2007 and the gala premiere was attended by cast members Simon Yam (任達華), Nick Cheung (張家輝), Annie Liu (劉心悠) and Irene Wan (溫碧霞).

The thriller features a rather extreme storyline about an organisation of women who plot to exterminate the world of men and the level of expletives used in the script raised concerns at the censorship stage, where it was almost rated as a category III [adult] movie.
